George was the founder of G.D.Usher & Son, the building firm in 1870.

Many of the Victorian properties in Coniston were the result of this mans hard work. Most of Yewdale road was built by the firm.

George Dixon Usher also worked along side his friend; John Ruskin and some of his works still exist at Brantwood today revealing his skill and craftsmanship.

Ruskin, we believe held him in high regard  and was amazed to find that this tradesman could not read or write, however helpful with this hands.
